Laser Refractive Surgery in Paris, Dr Steven Nahaisi
Ophthalmic surgeon specializing exclusively in laser refractive surgery. LASIK, TransPRK and SMILE, at the Institut Laser Ophtalmologique Voltaire, Paris 11th (11e arrondissement).
I am Dr Steven Nahaisi, an ophthalmic surgeon specializing in laser refractive surgery. I operate at the Institut Laser Ophtalmologique Voltaire (Voltaire Laser Eye Institute) in Paris 11th, and I see patients in three practices in Paris. If you are thinking about life without glasses or contact lenses, I take care of you from the first consultation to the last check-up, and I recommend the technique that suits your eyes.
Which vision problem would you like to correct?
Laser refractive surgery provides a lasting correction of myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia and presbyopia. Each vision problem has its own specific features, and the answer depends on your case.

Myopia
Distant objects look blurry. You squint to read a sign, and you need your glasses as soon as you wake up. Laser surgery corrects myopia (nearsightedness) by flattening the cornea so that the image is focused on the retina again.

Astigmatism
Your vision is blurry and distorted at all distances. Lines look stretched and your eyes tire quickly. The laser regularizes the curvature of the cornea with a personalized treatment.

Hyperopia
You constantly strain to see clearly, especially up close (a process called accommodation). Headaches set in at the end of the day, along with eye fatigue. Many farsighted people do not know they are, because the eye compensates, until the day it no longer can.

Presbyopia
Around age 40-45, the crystalline lens loses its flexibility and the eye can no longer accommodate. You hold your phone farther away to read, and you need more light. Several strategies exist depending on your profile: monovision, PresbyLASIK or lens surgery.

“I don’t operate on eyes, I operate on patients”
People sometimes ask me what “the best technique” is. None is better than the others in absolute terms. What matters is the one suited to your prescription and your lifestyle. That is the one I will recommend to you.
I am an ophthalmic surgeon, and I do nothing but refractive surgery. I have more than 10 years of experience in ophthalmology, including refractive surgery since my residency, and several thousand patients operated on. This specialization allows me to master all the techniques (LASIK, TransPRK, SMILE) and, above all, to know which one I would recommend in each situation.
And when the laser is not the right option, I say so. I have many requests, and I have no reason to push for surgery. I refuse to operate on a cornea that is not suitable, and I advise you against the procedure when I believe the result will not match what you expect. If a surgery other than laser would suit you better, I refer you to a colleague who specializes in it.
Three techniques, and the choice is based on your eyes
The technique is chosen during the pre-operative assessment, based on your corneal thickness, your topography, your aberrometry and your needs. All procedures are performed on the Schwind excimer laser and Visumax 800 femtosecond laser platform at the Institut Voltaire.

LASIK: the gold-standard technique
The most widely performed technique in the world. A femtosecond laser creates a corneal flap, then the excimer laser reshapes the cornea according to your prescription, guided point by point by aberrometry. You recover in 24-48 hours and go back to work the next day. It is my first-line technique for most patients.

TransPRK: maximum safety, no flap
A surface treatment, with no flap and no contact. It is the safest technique from a biomechanical standpoint, the one I recommend when the cornea is thinner or for professions exposed to impacts. Recovery is more gradual: allow about a week before returning to work comfortably.

SMILE: minimally invasive, specific indications
Extraction of a corneal lenticule through a 2-3 mm micro-incision. It is a minimally invasive technique that I reserve for specific indications, in particular high-level combat sports that require a quick return. I consider LASIK superior in terms of quality of correction and enhancement options. I also have much more clinical experience with it.

PresbyLASIK: laser correction of presbyopia
For presbyopic patients who want to get rid of their reading glasses. Several strategies are possible (monovision, PresbyMAX, hybrid). The choice is made case by case, based on your visual profile and your expectations.

What if laser surgery is not possible?
For very high myopia (beyond -10 D, sometimes -12 D depending on the cornea), corneas that are too thin or misshapen, and special cases, other solutions can sometimes be considered. I then refer these patients to specialized colleagues, depending on what suits them best.
When laser surgery is not possible: alternatives and referral
From the first question to the last check-up
01Step 1: the pre-operative consultation
A complete assessment: visual acuity, corneal topography, aberrometry on the Schwind platform, fundus exam, corneal thickness measurement. We discuss your prescription and your expectations, and I explain which technique I recommend and why. You leave with all the answers and time to think it over, with no pressure.
The consultation is at the standard rate set by French national health insurance. At the Paris 10th and 19th practices, with no fee supplement, there is nothing to pay upfront (direct billing). At the Institut Voltaire (11th), you pay €50 upfront, including a €30 fee supplement, partly or fully reimbursed by your complementary health insurance.
02Step 2: surgery day
Procedures take place on Friday mornings at the Institut Voltaire, sometimes on Wednesday afternoons. When you arrive, the final aberrometry measurements are repeated and anesthetic drops are applied. It is painless. The procedure takes about ten minutes for both eyes. You go home the same day, with someone accompanying you or alone by ride-hailing car or taxi.
03Step 3: post-operative follow-up
A check-up between day 1 and day 10 depending on the technique, then regular follow-up. Follow-up is unlimited and included in the price of the surgery. If an enhancement is needed in the first year, it is also covered.

Fixed fees, no surprises
Included in the fee: complete post-operative follow-up, with no limit on the number of visits, and a possible enhancement in the first year.

Frequently asked questions about refractive surgery
Does laser eye surgery hurt?
No. The procedure is done under anesthetic drops, and you feel nothing during the operation. With TransPRK, the first 48 hours can be uncomfortable, but after that it is over.
How long does refractive surgery take?
About ten minutes for both eyes. The laser itself only lasts a few seconds per eye.
When can I go back to work after LASIK or TransPRK?
After LASIK, the next day or the day after. After TransPRK, allow about a week. I provide a sick note if needed.
Are the results of refractive surgery permanent?
The correction is lasting. The vast majority of patients never wear glasses again for the corrected error. A slight change is possible over 10-15 years, but it remains minimal and an enhancement can be considered if needed.
What if I am not a candidate for laser eye surgery?
It happens, and it is not a failure. If your cornea or your profile does not allow laser surgery to be done safely, I explain it to you clearly and refer you to the most suitable solution, including to a colleague if necessary.
Do I need a referral or a letter from another ophthalmologist to see Dr Nahaisi?
No. You can book an appointment directly on Doctolib or by phone, with no referral letter needed. You do not need to see another ophthalmologist before the consultation.
How much does laser eye surgery cost in Paris?
Fees are fixed: €3,200 for LASIK, €2,800 for TransPRK, €3,800 for SMILE, €3,600 for PresbyLASIK. These prices always cover both eyes, follow-up included. Payment can be spread over 4 installments.
Are there risks with refractive surgery?
As with any surgery, there are risks, but they are very low and well controlled. I take the time to explain them in detail during the consultation, without hiding anything. Careful patient selection remains the best prevention.
Ready to take the leap?
The first step is a consultation to assess your eyes, your prescription and the options available to you. No commitment. We do the complete assessment and discuss it frankly.
No need for a referral letter or to see another ophthalmologist beforehand. You can book an appointment directly.
